The Journey:
After three years of pain, discomfort and limited activity, I couldn't
imagine that I would once again feel like a teenager and sometimes act
like one. Without pain and with a new full range of motion, I
continually feel like running, jumping, walking at a rapid pace and
simply staying in motion. Having been deprived of motion and then having
motion restored, one has a new sense of vitality, youth and an eagerness
to jump and shout for joy.
Since the operation, just over nine months ago, not only has my physical
ability returned, but my stress and mental state has improved immensely.
I now join in on all family and social activities with renewed interest
and heightened participation. Above all, being able to interact with the
young and old with a friendly smile and a "Yes, I will join you," makes
the operation even more satisfying.
"Knock on wood:"
Over the nine months, no pain, full range of motion and follow up x-rays
that look like the equipment was meant to be a part of the hip all
along.
Why so successful?
Primarily a great doctor and team. Also, being in shape before the
operation I am sure is partially responsible, but having immediate
access to well trained professionals during the rehab was the second
biggest factor after Dr. Rogerson's team. The hospital staff for the
first two days was outstanding, and the HipHab rehab staff the next
three days was integral to a speedy and full recovery.
I feel the water exercises were essential. Being able to work on full
range of motion exercises in the water without weight bearing
restrictions was key to rebuilding the proper muscle and flexibility.
Having continued to exercise and stretch three times per week, I have
almost recovered full strength in the affected leg and hip along with as
much flexibility as a youngster. Although my scores have not changed, I
returned to golf six months after the operation with no swing
restrictions. I returned to casual biking within one month of the
operation and full unassisted walking within 3 1/2 weeks. I did not
return to racquetball only as a guard against damaging my other hip or
risking such things as rotator cuff. The delay in returning to golf I
believe has been a huge factor in my full recovery. The extra time to
rebuild muscle versus tearing it down seems to have made a significant
difference.
Any surprises?
That more people don't have it done. Having heard stories related to
operations, I was uncertain of what to expect. Having gone through the
operation, I would highly recommend it. When I see others walking with a
limp or in pain, I can't help but offer sympathy and a, "You have to
talk with John and his team." The care and sincerity of John and his
team are simply the best.
Reaction of family and friends:
Can't believe the difference. Great physical improvement, and a positive
outlook and a bounce in my step; all have commented on it.
