Birmingham Hip Resurfacing - Patient Journal

Deb Olson - November 2006

November 22, 2006

It's Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. I had surgery on 11-17. Dr. Rogerson was able to do a BHR even though the damage to my hip was worse than x-rays showed and my bones were smaller than he thought they'd be.

Since I had surgery late in the day on Friday, I didn't get up except for the commode until early Saturday morning when I walked around the bed partway. Therapy Saturday was exhausting. I think made worse by the "Drop Foot" I got as a side effect of the surgery. Sunday morning therapy was much better, although I still felt weak due to low oxygen in the blood. I used the oxygen in the room most of the time until I came to HipHab.

We moved in here Sunday and I took over the bedroom and Tom got the couch. He was great about helping me and enjoyed the cable TV.

The pool therapy was great on Monday morning. My therapy sessions were great, although I was awfully tired. The massage felt great.

The pain is manageable with Tylenol (I was getting itchy with the Oxycodone). Wednesday morning I had a good PT and decided to go to the pool for self-managed PT in the afternoon, although I was still tired. I'd slept badly the night before with a lot of heartburn and lots of waking up to the sound of trains and sirens. Anyway, I did the activities on my activity sheet and when I started to walk at the end of the session I was bothered by the light making a stroke effect on the shallow end wall. I got sick to my stomach and I asked the guard to bring me a bag to puke in. I got the "dry heaves" when I got out and ended up taking a wheelchair ride back to the room, where my husband helped me shower off and go back to bed.

Not sure if I had a "bug" or if the fatigue and whooziness is still from the surgery but anyway my drop foot is a little bit better and we'll see what go home day is like tomorrow.

The team here and at Dr. Rogerson's office is great. Dr. R. and Renee saw me in the hospital several times and he came here once already and called tonight. I'm hoping for a good night sleep tonight and waking up less tired for Thanksgiving.

I'm dreading the ride back to Marathon – but it'll be nice to be home too.
